“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?” Is. 58:6
It is with great excitement that we announce our theme for this year’s Breakthrough – “Justice Evangelism.” As As many of you know, God is doing a new thing in our generation of Christ-followers on campus. Rejecting the false “social justice vs. evangelism” dichotomy, Kingdom-minded men and women are after God’s heart for the oppressed! We are fusing together verbal witness with social justice activism. In church history figures like St. Francis of Assisi and William Wilburforce modeled this well. Today, it’s Gary Haugen of International Justice Mission who is gaining a high profile (see this month’s New Yorker) and making modern-day slavery an issue.
Within our own InterVarsity nationally, Evangelist York Moore has been at the forefront of developing creative outreach campaigns, like the Price of Life Invitational, to grab the attention of the campus by showing God’s heart for the spiritually lost and the physically oppressed. All over the nation fellowships are addressing human trafficking, injustice, world poverty and inhumane working conditions while proclaiming the Good News of personal redemption through Jesus. York be our Saturday night speaker and will share what he sees God doing!
R. York Moore is the author of Grow Your Faith by Giving it Away and a National Evangelist for InterVarsity. He lives in Michigan with his wife and two kids. For more info about York, check out his website www.tellthestory.net.
